Building sustainable mineral supply chains: The need for transparency

EITI side event at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference

  • 11:30 – 13:00 CET
  • 18 November 2025
  • In-person

Date: Tuesday 18 November 2025 11:30 - 13:00 BRT

Location: Side Event Room 3 (Blue Zone), COP30

This COP30 side event, titled "Building sustainable mineral supply chains: The need for transparency" and co-organised by the EITI and ICMM, will explore the role of transparency in ensuring that mineral production delivers equitable benefits across the supply chain, including for local communities and citizens of producer countries. Speakers from Indigenous Peoples’ organisations, industry and international institutions will discuss existing mechanisms and best practices that can be used to improve community engagement in the mining sector.

Building on wider efforts to establish just and sustainable mineral supply chains, including the UN Secretary General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, the event will identify opportunities for collaboration between stakeholders that can help to advance transparency and support the interests of local communities and the citizens of resource-rich countries more broadly.

Speakers

  • Sascha Raabe, Head of the Global Alliance for Responsible and Green Minerals, UNIDO
  • Bjørn Kjetil Mauritzen, Head of Sustainability, Norsk Hydro
  • Joan Carling, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI)
  • Tengi George-Ikoli, Country Manager, Natural Resource Governance Institute

Moderated by Tatiana de Alvarenga, EITI Country Officer – Lusophone Africa

Objectives

  • Discuss how rising demand for minerals driven by the energy transition is affecting communities near mining projects and exacerbating governance risks.
  • Explore how existing mechanisms and best practices for local engagement and dialogue in connection with mineral extraction can help to deliver a just transition.
  • Identify opportunities for information-sharing and collaboration between impacted communities and companies across the energy sector’s value chains – from miners to electric vehicle manufacturers and renewable energy companies.
