EITI's engagements at the Climate Week NYC 2024

  • 22 – 29 September 2024
  • In-person

From 22 to 29 September 2024, New York City, USA hosted the annual Climate Week. Each year, business leaders, political change makers, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world, gather to drive the transition, speed up progress and champion change. As part of the event, the EITI organised a couple of sessions with partners on 25 and 26 September.

Day 4

9:00–11:00
by EITI, Ford Foundation
9:00–11:00
New York
The energy transition is reshaping the future of countries rich in natural resources. Shifts in demand for fossil fuels, minerals and renewable energy hold both promise and challenges for communities living near energy and mining projects.

This roundtable discussion, hosted by the EITI and the Ford Foundation, delved into how the energy transition is impacting communities, with a focus on sharing lessons between the extractive industries and the renewable energy sector. Building on insights from the Engaging communities in a just transition project, the event connected representatives from both sectors with community and civil society stakeholders to explore how transparency and multi-stakeholder dialogue can strengthen community engagement in decision-making, mitigate risks and maximise benefits. The event sought to identify opportunities for collaborative problem-solving to the challenges that the transition to a low-carbon economy can bring for communities.

This event was by invitation only. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Day 5

12:00–13:15
by EITI, OGP and IRMA, with support from Urban Sustainability Program at Brooklyn College, CUNY.
12:00–13:15
CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, 25 W 43rd St, 18th floor, New York, NY 10036
The energy transition is driving transformative changes in the extractive industries, fundamentally altering how resource-rich countries manage their oil, gas, and mining sectors. In addition, companies and consumers worldwide want to know that their investments make the world a better place.

Within this shifting context, transparency and good governance are more important than ever. Citizens, investors, end brands, and public officials need access to information and must be able to hold decision-makers and companies to account. This is directly important to protect human rights, ensure that revenues are fairly distributed, and limit undue influence on policy making and implementation.

This session explored how to achieve a credible, transparent and accountable transition, with a focus on three processes to improve governance - EITI, OGP, and IRMA. Speakers from government, industry and civil society from a diverse range of countries discussed how to leverage existing processes for transparency and open government to deliver a just transition. Attendees learnt how these processes not only help ensure justice for communities but also ensure that supply chains for evolving industries are cleaner and more just.
