EITI at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development
Summary of the EITI's engagement at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain
Dates: 30 June - 3 July
Location: FIBES Sevilla Exhibition and Conference Centre, Seville, Spain
Organised by the United Nations, the Fourth Financing for Development Conference (FfD4) gathers governments, financial institutions, civil society, academics and other stakeholders to address financing needs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change and biodiversity.
On Wednesday, 2 July, the EITI participated in the side event, focusing on mobilising revenues from the extractive sector.
Day 3
With official development assistance (ODA) projected to fall in 2025, developing countries will need to raise their own financing to support long-term development. Thirty-four of 54 EITI implementing countries are fiscally dependent on extractive revenues, yet profit shifting, illicit financial flows and limited fiscal options undermine effective taxation. Transparency and global disclosure initiatives - such as the EITI and Opening Extractives - support domestic revenue mobilisation by strengthening accountability and reducing revenue leakages. This panel, moderated by EITI Executive Director Mark Robinson, explored how developing countries can optimise taxation of their extractive industries as demand for critical energy transition minerals rises.
