Government of Senegal to host 2023 EITI Global Conference

Flagship conference to be held in Dakar in June 2023

Held for the first time in Africa, this global forum will gather 1,000 stakeholders from government, industry, civil society and academia to celebrate two decades of extractive sector transparency and set future priorities for EITI implementation.

The Government of Senegal will host the ninth EITI Global Conference in Dakar on 13–14 June 2023 at the Centre International de Conférences Abdou Diouf (CICAD), marking the first time that this flagship conference will be held in Africa.

H.E. President Macky Sall of the Republic of Senegal welcomed the decision to bring the EITI Global Conference to Senegal, a country that has implemented the EITI since 2013: “I am delighted that Senegal will host this flagship event, which will bring together all global stakeholders working to improve transparency and good governance in the extractive sector. Senegal has made remarkable progress in implementing the EITI and looks forward to sharing its experience. I remain convinced that the exploitation of natural resources must benefit citizens. And all producing countries must make this a priority to ensure a stable and sustainable extractive sector.”

Registration opens today for the 2023 EITI Global Conference, which will gather more than 1,000 stakeholders from the extractive and energy sectors under the theme “Transparency in transition”. The forum will take stock of progress in publishing and using open data to inform decision-making and public debate on accountable natural resource management.

“The themes we will discuss at the conference are extremely pertinent,” said EITI Board Chair, Rt Hon. Helen Clark. “The extractive and energy sectors are evolving rapidly as demand for access to clean and affordable energy rises. Without robust public debate and sound governance, the energy transition risks leaving vulnerable groups behind. The energy transition can and should result in better energy access and economic opportunities for all.”

Marking the EITI’s 20th anniversary and 10 years since Senegal joined the EITI, this inclusive forum will celebrate achievements in natural resource transparency and multi-stakeholder dialogue across the EITI’s 57 implementing countries and beyond. It will also look to the future to consider how the EITI should adapt to a changing energy landscape and growing demand for an open and accountable resource sector.

Founded on the belief that a country’s natural resources belong to its citizens, the EITI was established in 2003 with the vision that strengthened transparency of natural resource revenues can reduce corruption, help to transform economies, and raise the living standards of citizens in resource-rich countries.

Twenty years on, the 2023 EITI Global Conference will gather stakeholders from around the world with a view to continue to build on the gains achieved in transparency in the evolving context of the energy transition.

The EITI Members' Meeting, composed of representatives of implementing countries, supporting countries, civil society organisations, industry and institutional investors, will be held ahead of the conference on 12 June to appoint the 2023–2026 EITI Board.
