A series of key meetings are taking place next week (22-26 October) in Lusaka related to the EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative). Senior civil servants, company executives and civil society leaders from more than 50 countries are taking part in these meetings.
The EITI is a global standard ensuring transparency of payments from natural resources. 36 countries across the globe are implementing the standard, 15 of these have become 'EITI Compliant'. Zambia was declared the first 'EITI Compliant' country in the Southern and East Africa region on 19 September.
22-24 October: Meeting of the National Coordinators from all the 36 EITI countries. This will be a unique opportunity for all the leaders of the 36 national EITIs to discuss and agree what they want from a revised EITI Standard. To see the full list of countries, go to www.eiti.org/countries
22-24 October: Seminar for seven countries in the region that have shown interest in implementing the EITI. These are Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. We hope that the participants from those countries can learn from Zambia's and other countries' experiences. GIZ, the World Bank and EITI are co-hosting this seminar.
25-26 October: Meeting of the international EITI Board. The status of a number of countries will be decided, including whether Iraq and Mozambique are 'EITI Compliant' and whether to accept Sao Tome and Principe's application to become 'EITI Candidate'. The Board is composed of senior government officials from implementing and supporting countries, as well as representatives from companies and civil society.
