Belgium

The Belgian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation promotes the interests of Belgium and Belgians abroad. It enhances the coherence of action of Belgium internationally and coordinates the European policy of Belgium as a federal State. The Federal Ministry pursues the objective of a more secure, just and prosperous world and promotes the fundamental values and principles of human rights, democracy and a rules-based multilateral system.

Belgium intends to increase its financial support of the EITI. It will continue to engage in promoting transparency and accountability to enhance the contribution of the extractives sector to domestic revenues for inclusive and sustainable growth.

Statement of support

Engagement with the EITI

Belgium joined the EITI as a supporting country in 2017, with an annual contribution of  EUR 220.000 towards the activities of the EITI International Secretariat. Belgium is actively engaged in the governance of the EITI through its membership on the EITI Board, where it represents the supporting countries constituency. It is actively involved in Board deliberations through the Implementation Committee and  Governance and Oversight Committee.

Belgium acts as a coordinator of the supporting countries constituency and will take up new Board membership terms in mid-2021.

Support for EITI implementing countries

Belgium supports EITI implementation through the World Bank Extractives Global Programmatic Support (EGPS) Multi-Donor Trust Fund. Belgium has contributed to transparency and good governance in the extractives sector and focussed on countries in fragile situations. The country intends to extend its support of the World Bank EGPS by EUR 2 million to benefit the small and artisanal mining sector, with special attention on the impact of the Covid-19 crisis and gender equality.

In bilateral programs, Belgium supports projects on anti-corruption, transparency, improving governance and the sustainable development of the extractives sector in fragile states in Africa. Following the Addis Tax Initiative, Belgium contributes to strengthening the capacity of partner countries by generating national revenues in the extractives sector to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Moreover, Belgium supports capacity building of local civil society organisations to improve resilience and increase monitoring of government accountability.

Belgium supports the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on initiatives on due diligence in the supply chains of extractives industries. The country also supports projects fighting corruption in the extractives sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
