The Netherlands

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the channel through which the Dutch Government communicates with foreign governments and international organisations. It coordinates and carries out Dutch foreign policy.

It is widely believed that well-governed and transparent commodities industries contribute to healthy and trustworthy environments for Dutch citizens. For participants in the Dutch EITI multi-stakeholder group, which includes representatives of the Dutch government, oil and gas companies and civil-society organizations, this trust is a major policy goal.

Statement of support

Engagement with the EITI

The Netherlands has been closely involved with the EITI since 2009. The country is a supporting country as well as an implementing country.

After supporting the EITI for almost a decade, the Netherlands applied to become an EITI implementing country and became its member in 2018. In January 2020 the Dutch multi-stakeholder group published its first EITI Report covering the activities of the extractive industries in the country in 2017.

There is a great awareness in the Netherlands about the importance of transparency in the oil, gas, and salt industries. The first report provided the public with the possibility to read about the value chain of the extractive industries. It described the process of extractive production in the Netherlands, the contribution of the sector to the Dutch economy and the financial flows between the Dutch extractive industries and the Dutch government. The objective for the Netherlands while implementing the EITI Standard is to contribute to a well-informed debate about the value chains in the extractive industries in the Netherlands. The data in the reports is already largely available elsewhere. The main value of the publication is that it makes the data accessible to everyone in one single source.

As a supporting country, the Netherlands has provided financial support for the activities of the EITI International Secretariat. The Netherlands is actively engaged in the governance of the EITI through its membership in the EITI Board. It also represents the supporting country constituency in the EITI's Governance and Oversight Committee.
