EITI 2014 briefing

The EITI International Secretariat invites our friends here in Oslo to a lunch briefing on 4 December at 11.00 at our offices (Ruseløkkveien 26, 0251 Oslo).

The EITI has come a long way since the Secretariat opened its doors here in 2008. With Colombia, Myanmar, the UK and the US amongst countries having joined this year, the number of implementing countries now stands at 48. The EITI has become a global standard and the perception that it is for only weakly governed countries is no longer justified. Through the adoption of the EITI Standard in 2013, the EITI has become more relevant in improving governance in the extractive sector, moving the EITI from revenue collection to being embedded into wider reforms. The EITI is also increasingly becoming a forum where companies, civil society and governments meet to reach compromises that further a common agenda of transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources. We will begin with a brief update from us here at the Secretariat, followed by a discussion drawing on some of you, including representatives from the Norwegian Foreign Ministry and Carine Smith Ihenacho, Vice President, Legal, Statoil and EITI Board member. A light lunch will be served at 12.00.
