The Board decided that Afghanistan’s Validation was postponed until 1 November 2017.

Decision on the postponement of Afghanistan's Validation

Decision reference
2017-43 / BC-240
Decision basis
2016 EITI Standard, Requirement 8.5 - EITI Validation extension request

The Board decided that Afghanistan was eligible for an extension of Validation under Requirement 8.5 of the EITI Standard. Afghanistan’s Validation is extended by four months and will begin on 1 November 2017. If the security situation continues to make Validation unpracticable, the Government of Afghanistan may also wish to consider requesting voluntary suspension in accordance with Requirement 8.6.

Background:

Afghanistan had sought a one-year extension for the commencement of Validation (1 July 2017). The Implementation Committee has assessed the extension request in accordance with the EITI Standard (Requirement 8.5).The assessment was that Afghanistan is eligible for an extension, but suggests that a four month extension is granted, i.e. until 1 November 2017 rather than one year. This is consistent with the previous recommendation of the Validation Committee to postpone the initial assessment for security reasons.
