Oxfam is a global organisation working to end the injustice of poverty. Oxfam helps people build better futures for themselves, hold the powerful accountable, and save lives in disasters. Oxfam has a vision of a just and sustainable world; a world where people and the planet are at the centre of the economy, where women and girls live free from violence and discrimination, where the climate crisis is contained and where governance systems are inclusive and allow for those in power to be held to account.

Oxfam works with partners and in coalitions in over 30 countries to increase transparency and protect community rights around oil, gas and mining development. Oxfam’s vision is that local communities and Indigenous peoples are at the center of decision-making processes in relation to their lands and resources and development priorities.

Engagement with the EITI

Oxfam has collaborated with the EITI in a variety of ways. Oxfam served on the EITI International Board from 2006 to 2009. It was also part of the Multi-stakeholder Group (MSG) of the United States Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (USEITI) when the United States was an EITI implementing country. Oxfam also supports local implementation where partners are supportive, for example, as part of the Multi-stakeholder Group (MSG) in Uganda.

Oxfam has engaged rigorously on the adoption of the contract transparency requirement, the adoption of gender requirements, including greater participation by women’s rights organisations, and the role of the EITI in the face of civic space restrictions.
