Australia
The Government of Australia supports the EITI through DFAT. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) works to make Australia stronger, safer and more prosperous. It also works to provide timely and responsive consular and passport services and to ensure a secure Australian government presence overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the government. DFAT works with other government agencies to ensure that Australia's pursuit of its global, regional and bilateral interests is coordinated effectively.
Australia is a strong supporter of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). We are an active member of supporting countries sub-constituency and an observer at EITI Board meetings.
Engagement with the EITI
Australia has committed AUD 5 million to support the EITI International Secretariat since 2011. This builds on AUD 27 million (2015-2024) in current commitments to support developing countries to strengthen extractives governance and transparency through global and bilateral investments.

AUD 13.6 million (2015-2022) for the World Bank Extractives Global Programmatic Support Multi-Donor Trust Fund, which assists resource-rich developing countries in managing their resources sustainably and transparently,

AUD 8.5 million (2019-2024) to the Australia Mongolia Extractives Program, which is helping Mongolia progress towards equitable and sustainable economic growth of its mining industry,

AUD 3.8 million (2017-2023) for the International Monetary Fund Managing Natural Resources Wealth Trust Fund to assist developing countries to get a fair share of their natural resource wealth, and

AUD 1.1 million (2018-2021) for Transparency International-Australia Mining for Sustainable Development Program for extractives governance activities.

Support for EITI implementing countries
Australia has directly supported EITI implementation in Indonesia, including regional knowledge hubs in Myanmar and Mongolia through the Natural Resource Governance Institute (AUD 2.5 million, 2015-17). AUD 2.4 million (2016-2020) of Australia’s support to the World Bank Myanmar Partnership Multi-Donor Trust Fund is directly supporting the Myanmar Government to implement the EITI.
Australia also supported Papua New Guinea in its EITI candidacy bid and provided ad hoc support to bilateral partners on domestic EITI implementation.
