The discovery and development of natural resources presents opportunities and obstacles to peace and development.

Hosted by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), this Transparency Matters event discussed the key role of extractives governance in promoting stability and peace and shared a concrete example of how extractives governance reforms were implemented in Afghanistan. It also allowed for reflection on the opportunities and challenges of resource governance in post-conflict environments, including how international stakeholders could contribute to supporting resilient institutions.

Participants heard insights from:

  • Rt Hon. Helen Clark – EITI Board Chair and former Prime Minister of New Zealand
  • Nargis Nehan – Former Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Industries in Afghanistan and women's rights activist
  • Bjørg Sandkjær - State Secretary for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Norway

The event was moderated by Mark Robinson, Executive Director of the EITI.
The in-person event was held in English and live-streamed on Youtube.
